Since Bernie Sander’s 2016 presidential campaign, Americans’ interest in socialism has reached historic heights. The Democratic Socialists of America have achieved record membership numbers, and polls have found that more American millennials have a positive view of socialism than they do of capitalism. However, many political commentators have pointed out that in many cases, this “socialism” actually refers to European-style social democracy: strongly-regulated capitalism with a strong social safety net. But what about real socialism? While experiments in state socialism such as the USSR ultimately led to repression and failure, are there perhaps more effective ways to achieve a democratically-managed economy based on meeting need rather than profit? And what of the hierarchies which govern our lives? Do we truly need an “enlightened elite” to govern and make decisions on our behalf, or are those same hierarchies simply creating artificial reasons to justify their existence in a self-perpetuating cycle? Join us for what’s sure to be a fascinating presentation on Rojava, a radical society which has worked to address these questions and more from within the chaos of the Syrian Civil War.
